Both tea lovers and medical researchers laud the medicinal value of white tea. If you’ve read our previous blog post, you should already know that white tea is very minimally processed. It is because of such processing that white tea has a higher concentration of disease-fighting antioxidants.
Here are five health benefits of white tea.
1. White Tea: Anti-bacterial & Anti-viral Benefits
Studies at Pace University show that white tea extract can help prevent disease by slowing the growth of bacteria that cause illnesses such as Staphylococcus infections, Streptococcus infections, and pneumonia. According to Milton Schiffenbauer, Ph.D., microbiologist at Pace University’s Dyson College, white tea extract can destroy organisms that cause disease. White tea was also shown to be even more effective than green tea at inactivating bacterial viruses and combating human pathogenic viruses.
“Study after study with tea extract proves that it has many healing properties. This is not an old wives tale, it’s a fact.”
2. White Tea: Dental Health Benefits
There are also beneficial effects to teeth and gums when drinking white tea. White tea comprises fluoride, flavonoids and tannins. Studies show that the fluoride in white tea helps reduce dental caries. Furthermore, the tannins, flavonoids, and polyphenols of white tea help prevent the growth of dental plaque.
3. White Tea: Anti-Aging Benefits
Studies conducted by London researchers found that even in very small amounts, white tea is highly potent in providing physical benefits. Due to its antioxidants, white tea was shown to prevent enzyme activities that cause skin wrinkling and sagging. It was also found to help prevent against inflammation, which can cause premature aging and is a major cause of skin wrinkles.
4. White Tea: Weight Loss Benefits
White tea can also be a helpful supplement to weight loss programs. According to a 2013 article in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, white tea’s high concentration of antioxidants helps boost metabolism. White tea also has natural caffeine, which is connected with weight loss.
Note: For those concerned with caffeine intake, please note white, green, black, and oolong teas all have caffeine.
5. White Tea: Anti-Cancer Benefits
According to researchers from the Oregon State University, white tea may be the most potent tea in combatting cancer. The researchers explain that many of a tea’s cancer-fighting polyphenols get destroyed in the oxidation process. Their chemical analysis shows that, due to white tea being an unoxidized tea, it has a very high amount of cancer-fighting polyphenols, surpassing that of even green tea.
